How to Lose Weight Fasting

Fasting is the act of abstaining from food, drink or both for a period of time. From the aspect of health and lifestyle, fasting could be used to aid in your weight loss efforts. There are some ways to do this, of which the most useful method would be intermittent fasting.

This method relies on a set interval of time where you abstain from food for 24 hours and then resume normal eating habits for the next 24 hours. This is called alternative day fasting and could be incorporated in your regime. During fasting, however, one must take adequate water to aid in the body’s metabolism processes. Otherwise, lack of water would cause the body to retain water and result in a bloated appearance.

Another method of fasting is to alternate between 20 hours of fasting and 4 hours of non-fasting, more popularly known as 20/4. A variation of this is 19/5, which is popularised by the Fast-5 regime.

However, it must be noted that fasting for a long period is not only harmful to the body, it causes detrimental effects to your health and general well-being. Although it could aid in fat loss, fasting would inevitably result in a calorie deficit where you consume too little calorie for your daily average calorie needs. Over time, your body condition could deteriorate with harmful effects to your metabolism.

As such, it is more appropriate to have a balanced, healthy lifestyle instead of a rigid fasting regime. Try having more complex carbohydrate such as vegetables and fruits, plus whole grain foods such as oat, wheat and natural grain plus nuts and beans. Not only could you supplement your body with the needed calorie, you could cut down your fasting period and avoid going through dangerous binging due to hunger.
